Wilkinson/Gibbon Marriage Durham 1916
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 15:08 GMT (UK) »
Please could anyone assist in finding more info from the following marriage, derived from WW1 service records. I would assume there is several Wesleyan Churches in Durham City even more in Co Durham !

John William Wilkinson br 1893 Sherburn Co Durham = Elizabeth Gibbon, spinster

Married Wesleyan Methodist Church, Durham 25th March 1916

Need more info or confirmation before ordering a cert.

Many Thanks

John

Using those details there is only one marriage registration on FreeBMD in the whole of  Co Durham

Q1 1916 Durham 10a 718 John W Wilkinson and Elizabeth Gibbon

So if that's what it says on his service record I'd say this entry is the right one and if you order it you'll get the full details.

Could it have been the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church Low Fell - Durham Rd - Gateshead?

As you have the exact date - it might be worth ringing the church to check.  If they still hold the records they may be able to give you details from the cert.  if they are at the RO somebody may be able to look it up for you.  Might save you £9.25

No, if it was that church the marriage would have been registered in Gateshead District. BMDs are registered in the district where the event happened.

The ONLY marriage registration in Free BMD for those details was registered in Durham District

Wesleyan & Primitive Methodist Chapels were thick on the ground in the north-east!

As it says 'Wesleyan Methodist Church Durham', my personal assumption would be that it was one in Durham itself, possibly that in Elvet http://www.elvet-church.org.uk/history.php

The local registrars use a different reference system to the country wide, combined, GRO one, so if you quoted a GRO index ref they won't be able to relate that to their system.

Though I am not sure what you are asking them, they are not allowed to tell you the details of the entry (including which church) you have to buy the cert for that, though 'some' registrars will confirm/deny info in a particular entry if you provide the info and ask them to check.

and if you are buying a cert, its slightly cheaper from the GRO

The marriage is on the Durham Register Office website, you can search for it and find it here https://gro.durham.gov.uk/pgPublicSearch.aspx

As Boo has said, the GRO references are not recognized by the local registrars.

You will still have to pay to buy the certificate.

You didn't answer my earlier question  :)
