Steam trawler "Restless Sea" around 1880-90s
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 16:28 GMT (UK) »
I found someone working on this ship as a cook in 1881 and wanted to find a bit more about the ship and try and get a picture if possible. Any ideas hints etc?

Ah! Seems she was named RESTLESS WAVE!
As you say she was built in Rye, built from wood with a 10 HP engine, Screw driven. 64.7 long, breadth 17.4 depth 8.3. 31NRT 46 GRT.
Registered in Ramsgate in June 1879 and owned by James Wales of Ramsgate until 1883 when she was purchased by James Hoad of Ramsgate. ( The builders Father/Brother?) She was purchased in 1887 by Bernard McGoldrick of Donegal then Alexander Fiddles of Aberdeen and her registry was transferred to Granton later purchased By James Muirhead of Edinburgh. RESTLESS WAVE was sunk 4 miles WxS of May Island on 19 October 1890.
For more information and maybe a photograph, try Ramsgate Maritime Museum. I think they may be closed in Winter but I have always found them responsive in the past.
Debbie Beavis, co owner of the Mariners L website is a mine of knowledge regards the Fishing history of Ramsgate. May be worth contacting her. http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/UKPages.htm
Crew List for 1879 are at https://www.kent.gov.uk/#
1890 http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2478998
1885 should be at NMM Greenwich

This post is a natural hand made product. The slight variations in spelling and grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are to be considered flaws. Unfortunately my preferred method of writing (Parker Quink on Basildon Bond) cannot be used.
