Help with New York - Buffalo?
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 17:47 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to help figure out a connection to my DNA cousin. She's coming up as a 3rd cousin to my father.

We think we've narrowed down the connection to Andrew Wyse b. 1811 in Ireland. He married around 1848 to Jane Nichol (b. in Canada), probably in Buffalo, NY. They had 2 children in quick succession in Buffalo:

Michael in 1851 and Mary Jane in 1852. There's an infant named Sarah living with them in the Buffalo 1850 census so possibly they had a daughter Sarah in 1850 as well. They later had another Sarah in Canada, to which they adjourned by 1853 (eventually returning to the States, to Michigan).

I know next to nothing about U.S. records and am wondering where I should look for baptisms and marriages for this group. Complicating matters, Andrew was Catholic and Jane was Protestant. It seems their children adopted Protestantism.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have searched Ancestry.com and Family Search indexes but no luck so far.

In U.S.A., church records often don't make it into some centralized database.  You may have to go to the local level.

See under the Roman Catholic topic here:
https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/New_York_Church_Records

https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Erie_County,_New_York_Genealogy
Marriages were recorded by the Erie County clerk starting in 1878 and go until April_1935.

A possible source is:

Email your question to a reference librarian.
