William Black and Frances Orange?
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 19:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I've come across a possible marriage for an Ancestor but Im not sure if the transcription is correct.
Its been transcribed as 'William Black & Frances Orange were married' the Marriage is 1661 Crowland, Lincolnshire.
Are their names correct? It looks like another word in between Black and &?

There seems to be 2 transcriptions circulating on FindMyPast.
One has been transcribed as 'William Blackshaw & Frances Crayne' the other as 'William Black & Frances Orange'

Im fairly certain you are correct with Crayne but Im not totally convinced that its 'Blackshaw'

I'm pretty sure about Crayne now I've looked at other names on the page, there are a couple of Clarkes and the C is very similar. The letter after the k of Black is an s & I've seen h look like that so Blackshaw is a contender.

Blackshaw and Crayne from me.

Snap from me.

The letters after Black look like 'shaw' - classic long 's', then the hook 'h', as osprey says, the tail of which goes right up to the 'w'.
The first letter of 'Crayne' is the classic capital 'C'. As osprey says, it's a good idea to compare strange letters to others on the same page to see if that helps.
