Thanks Milliepede, it's good to know they had survived, as they had lost three of their siblings and their father by 1876. I'm hoping they weren't in the workhouse in 1881.

The Manchester Workhouse Creed registers on Findmypast do have whole names rather than initials. I can find no Homer/Hamer/Horner suitable entries around 1880.

Thanks Josey. I think they would have been more likely to go into the Sheffield workhouse than Manchester, but I appreciate you checking for me. I'm thinking Sheffield because they were living there when Jane's husband died, and because of Emma's baptism in Sheffield, in 1885.
