Thanks, Debra. I hadn't come across that notice, nor had I ever heard that he might be from Cork. I can't find him in the Cork records and guess I assumed that as his children were born in Cloghran that's where he migrated from. Do you have a source for the immigration information?

Thanks again

Neil

BEALE.— On the 27th April, 1878 at her residence, Shelton, Keilor, Mrs. John Beale, sen., aged seventy years.

Fri 5 Oct 1906  BEALE.—On the 4th October, at his son's residence, "Shelton," Ardmillan-road, Moonee Ponds, John Beale, aged 86 years. A colonist of 57 years.

So, was he married before he left Ireland?

What inscriptions are on gravestone? wife's first name, etc

Sorry...was thinking of John junior!

The g/stone might get his mother's name.

Thanks for that, Debra - it's really interesting. I hadn't come across the immigration record, and I haven't come across evidence of John and his family being in Cork. Where did you find that?

Cheers, Neil

You can search assisted passenger lists here:

https://www.prov.vic.gov.au/explore-collection/explore-topic/passenger-records-and-immigration/assisted-passenger-lists

Put BALE in the keyword box and STAG in the filter box.  No images available there, but you can see the originals on microfiche (try your local library) or on Ancestry.

Here is a list of Anglican church registers and whether or not they have survived.

https://www.ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/registers/ParishRegisters/PARISHREGISTERS.pdf

If you want to check Cork City you would need to work your way through each church there and see what is available and where it is held.
