I will give it a shot!  I scanned it in colour - is it worth scanning in greyscale?

Thanks, it's clearly the Crown Inn on that one (after I've done some adjustments) and the sign behind still looks like Police.

I asked OH because he used to do a summer job delivering  to various pubs in Wiltshire/Somerset when he was a student but he doesn't recognise it at the moment.

What about the writing on the rear of coach does that hold any clue.  Is the furthest of the two uniformed gentlemen an AA patrol man?

In censuses "Crown Inn" appears in the following under Stroud

Caincsross,Whiteshill,Bisley,Nailsworth,Dursley,Painswick

I've tried an adjustment to read the coach but failed

The lettering on the coach is most likely out of focus on the original (the depth of field was not enough) so it would be virtually impossible to read it.  I tried with the first one earlier.  I'll have a quick go on the second one.

(not as good as my moon shots, Roger  :)  )

Stroud brewery records seem to be in Wiltshire archives, maybe widen the search a bit, as they had 600 pubs.

I an trying to find any town, using Francis frith site, that has posh lampposts like the one in the pic.
