« on: Sunday 25 November 18 15:58 GMT (UK) »
I was wondering, if there is any way we can check, search, british army contracts for the 1800s? 1850s... ish...

I have a family of gun lock makers who apparently had a number of contracts for ordanance...

any idea?

Gun lock makers would have been contracted to gunmakers it is they who would have had the Army contracts.
Gun parts were made by a number of sub-contractors, assembled & proved by the gunmaker.

I would have thought that any contracts would be from the Board of Ordnance, a bunch of civil servants, not the army as such.

The history of the Royal small arms factory Enfield may be worth a read.

Yes procured by the board but when I worked on such things we always referred to them as Army contracts.

There's an interesting debate in Hansard 27/02/1854-

https://hansard.parliament.uk/search

Search for "board of ordnance" (include the "   " as part of search key) and restrict search period to From - 27/02/1854   Until - 27/02/1854

Thank yuo everyone... I'll re read your replies in a second :) and yes it was the Ordanance board... (I assumed they were part of the army)

My family are the Braziers... of Wolverhampton... there were many of the same family here making guns at there different homes, but all in the same area of the town...... the fam descended from the london ... brazier family of gun lock makers...

it seems they were taking them down to london... the family staying there, while Frederick Brazier (my 4x great grand father)... came back here, presumably to collect more of the gun locks (as theres around 20-50 of the same fam making the gun locks at different addresses in the same area )the fam are staying in London and giving birth to there kids there, before returning to wolverhampton again 10, 20 years later

the most famous of the family being Joseph Brazier... ( a cousin of frederick)

pastes from the internet a lil of the contracts...

Joseph Brazier was a specialist lock maker who from the early 1800s made locks for the trade. His customers included the East India Company, the Royal African Company, the Hudsons Bay Company, and the Honourable Board of Ordnance. Nearer the end of the 1800s, some of the best London gunmakers used his locks rather than make their own. His main competitors were the Stantons and Edwin Chilton.

heres the link that tells more of the same family...
