M - thanks for this info.  I used your link to lan-opc  and I am finding my way around. As the baptisms show abode Staveley I have written to Priory Church to see if they can tell me for sure if the family came from Staveley near Newby Bridge or the one on the Kendal - Winderemere road. The former seems more likely but it would be good to know. P

frian - try as I might I cannot find what MIs are. Google list of abbreviations does not appear to show anything that looks relevant to family history. P

MIs are Memorial Inscriptions - the words on a gravestone or other memorials.
