Thanks Shaun,
Well spotted!
I wonder if he died in 1901/1902 or went bankrupt and did he leave a will ?

This looks like him on the 1891 census address Cambridge Circus Harrington Mansions
St Giles North London

James Guthrie single age 36 born Scotland ..Lamp Manufacturer & Glass Merchant ( boarder )

The Electoral Rolls records as mentioned he is at 9 Leather Lane was there in 1890 as mentioned on the information on death record for David ....Not seeing a will so far or any sighting of him  on the 1911 census ....Perhaps he returned to Scotland

I can update this thread as follows:
James was born on the 23 November 1851 in Forfar and baptised there on 14 Dec 1851.
Kelly's 1891 London Post Office Directory states

Guthrie James & Co. Lamp manufacturers and glass merchants.
Manufacturers of lamps in copper and brass and wrought iron.
Office & warehouse   9 Leather Lane. Holborn
Show Rooms   117 Holborn
Works   Shepherds Bush
Telegraphic Address "Guthrionus, London"

As shown above his entire stock was for sale in Oct 1902.
I am still keen to know why and what became of James.

Look forward to receiving any new information.
