Buenos Ayres, Almondbury/Lockwood borders
« on: Sunday 25 November 18 21:49 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for some local Yorkshire knowledge here.

I've found the 1851 Census record for an ancestor of mine, Ruth Burnley (nee Town(s)end), and her address is shown as 'Buenos Ayres' in Almondbury, near Huddersfield.  I've managed to track down the location of this on an old map from the National Library of Scotland - it's on Primrose Hill Road, heading towards the river Holme and Lockwood.  Looking at Google Street View I wonder if the property is still there, albeit boarded up and in a state of disrepair.

I'm fascinated as to why a property in Yorkshire in the 1850s was named after a place in Trinidad (it's Buenos Aires in Argentina) - does anyone know anything about this?  Please note this is idle curiosity and not a 'brick wall', so don't go to too much trouble on my account.

Many thanks, Janey

Certainly there are other examples locally where foreign cities or countries have been used to name for example farms: Egypt Farm,  Quebec farm, Scotland farm.
Another puzzling name in the Lockwood area is the little lane off Woodhead road named Solid. Cannot find the origins of the name at all.

Hi

Unfortunatley most of that area as been redeveloped. There are a few old houses but they old enough to have been built then.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the Trinidad vs Argentina. Buenos Ayres was by far the most commonly used English spelling for the Argentinian capital until very recent times.

How recent was that Shaun?  I've always known it as Aries (grew up in the 60's/70's)

If you look at newspaper reports from the 19th century there are thousands of references to Buenos “Ayres” in Argentina.

My grandmother was born there in 1915 and used that spelling all her life. (She also called the country “The Argentine” rather than Argentina).

I've never seen it spelled that way except by yourself, Milliepede. Buenos Aires is the normal spelling these days.
