Tasmania Gold mining records
« on: Monday 26 November 18 07:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have two questions.

I have a forebear who was likely to have been a miner in Tasmania during the late 1850’s and early 1860’s.

I have done a bit searching around and can’t find any records of miners at the time.  Do any mining
Licences databases or
Other sources of information
Survive?  My assumption given he likely left in 1961 and headed for the Otago goldfields is that he was somewhere in the north east.

Secondly, he later returned with his family to Zeehan where he died in
1895.  He is buried in the cemetery in Zeehan I understand.  I have a death record for him but have been unable to track down a burial record or probate or even coroner’s
Report if these existed at that time.  Could anyone who can help please let me know where I
Could find these.

Many thanks for all your help,
Keston.

Lots of mining in Tasmania in the time frame you mentioned.

Tasmanian archives people are very helpful, as are Trove newspapers.

I had a great uncle working in the mine in Zeehan in 1890-95.  - E C Gaunt.   He left there in 1895ish.

Can't help much, but you should be able to suss out stuff via those two sources.  There may well be mining museums about too, but I don't have that knowledge.

Thanks,
