Ahh..   ;D
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

There is also this William who died in Athy district 1921

That William was too young.

Ellen with sons Michael and Joseph in 1901.  There are birth registrations for both of them, parents William STYNES and Ellen MAHER.

So who is your William?  If he is the one that married Mary JACQUES then it looks like his parents were William STYNES and Rosanna ROTHWELL.

Liverpool William's birth registration:

STYNES, WILLIAM
Mother's maiden surname: ROTHWELL
GRO Reference: 1848  D Quarter in LIVERPOOL  Volume 20  Page 449

...... his wedding certificate says his dad is james

William STINES
Gender:    Male
Marital Status:    Single
Marriage Date:    2 Oct 1843
Marriage Place:    Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Father:    James STINES
Spouse:    Rosanna ROTHWELL
FHL Film Number:    1656508
Reference ID:    it 1, p 195, no 390

I assume that you mean that Margaret DOWLING was the wife of James and mother of William Snr.

How do you know that William Snr (born c1823) was born in Ireland?  Have you found him on the 1851 census?

Can you give some occupations please from the marriage or birth certs for the men in the family?

Answering my own question, I can see an image of the STINES/ROTHWELL marriage, and William is an iron moulder, his father James is a labourer.
