Lancashire BMD
There is this one  ???
James Henry Greenwood mmn Ward 1848 Hulme

They were in Hulme reg district in 1851

That sounds likely.  Henry was Thomas' father's name, and this family did re-use names in different generations

Where can I find this information?  I searched everywhere and couldn't find any birth information for James.  Hulme is the right area, and his mother's maiden name was Ward.

Where do I find this BMD?  I had searched the GRO but couldn't find him.  Is this a civil birth registration or a baptism?  Any information I could get a birth certificate from?

Hiram's baptism in 1846 is on the lancsopc site. It gives Thomas's occupation as Carder.

I first thought ,when you said card dealer,of a card sharp ie someone who with sleight of hand wins money by getting people to bet on the likeleyhood
of certain cards coming up when dealt by him.
A bit like”find the lady”.
Angel Street was not a nice place. I t had been ,quite good spacious houses bu gradually it deteriorated and eventually the houses were sub let with many families inhabiting one or two rooms, the cellars and attics.
Arkwright built a huge mill, and employed very many people from the locality.
The Angel Meadow district had been the  pleasant area around St. Michael and All Angels.A church serving the gentry, but they gradually moved out to greener pastures and the rot set in. And many back to back houses were built with only one entrance,a cellar, ground floor ,first floor and attic. No water or sanitation and so crowded together ,cholera was rife.
It seems your relative might have moved out before things got to the worst state.l
How interesting you had ancestors there.
In later years  Angel Meadow was described as an area where you could get mugged by nuns and police dogs would only go in threes ;D ;D ;D
My rellies were just out of the area,I’d have liked them to have been in the thick of it, inverted snobbery is not dead.

Viktoria, I think it is likely that a card dealer was something to do with the cotton or wool industry.  Thomas was described in other records as a carder, which was some job in a cotton or wool factory.  He also was described as a broker and Marine store keeper, so card dealer could have been some kind of broker in the cards used for combing wool.

I was just trying to see if the person in the 1871 census sounds like the same person in previous confirmed records.  His place and date of birth and name and the place he is living, and that I think his first wife had died four years before the 1871 census, makes me think it could be the same person.

I just thought how well that fits with James being James Henry Greenwood, as Thomas' father was called Henry and Bridget's father was James Ward.  So they call their second son after their fathers.

Their first son Hiram seems to have been named after Thomas' brother Hiram, and the name may go further back in the family than that.

You could send for the birth certificates to check the mothers’ names.
The ‘W’ in 1851 is a bit scribbly but not sure it could be an ‘H’.

Thanks, I can see that, and on second thoughts gambling in the way I describe would hardly be something he would have admitted,I believe it was illegal.
I do rush in where others think twice ::)

Say Hiram quickly to a hard of hearing official and it sounds like Aaron ;D
