I first thought ,when you said card dealer,of a card sharp ie someone who with sleight of hand wins money by getting people to bet on the likeleyhood
of certain cards coming up when dealt by him.
A bit like”find the lady”.
Angel Street was not a nice place. I t had been ,quite good spacious houses bu gradually it deteriorated and eventually the houses were sub let with many families inhabiting one or two rooms, the cellars and attics.
Arkwright built a huge mill, and employed very many people from the locality.
The Angel Meadow district had been the pleasant area around St. Michael and All Angels.A church serving the gentry, but they gradually moved out to greener pastures and the rot set in. And many back to back houses were built with only one entrance,a cellar, ground floor ,first floor and attic. No water or sanitation and so crowded together ,cholera was rife.
It seems your relative might have moved out before things got to the worst state.l
How interesting you had ancestors there.
In later years Angel Meadow was described as an area where you could get mugged by nuns and police dogs would only go in threes
My rellies were just out of the area,I’d have liked them to have been in the thick of it, inverted snobbery is not dead.
