Perhaps I should have been more explicit. 
I remember that if I referred to "she" without making it clear who "she" was, I used to be asked "Who's she  - the cat's mother?"  ;D
In this case "they" were the female "kittens" not the male one.  ;D
Human genealogy is simple compared to feline genealogy.  ;D
