upgrading Family Tree Maker
« on: Monday 26 November 18 21:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I am a returning former researcher! I have recently switched on my ancient computer and looked at my Family Tree Maker 2005 program - thousands of names on there - and I'm wondering how to upgrade this. I have some GEDCOM file thing somewhere...DOes anyone have any info on how I can upgrade, what it costs and how i do it please?

I have been out of this for almost 12 years

Thanks!

Alison

Are you planning to use a different computer (you say ancient comp).  Ftm 2005 will probably work on a more modern computer, I'm using ftm v6 on a win 10 machine.  If you have the installation disks try it before spending money replacing it.  Unless you WANT to upgrade of course.

What are the newer versions - how different are they? I do remember it was very good!

The old version is on an old windows computer, I have since had a mac...

How much is it to upgrade roughly?

Thanks

Alison

I use Family Tree Maker 2017 on a Mac. Your version won't work on a Mac, so you will need to upgrade I think. Since it was taken over by MacKiev, the only version that syncs with Ancestry is the FTM2017. It costs about £80, but might be worth contacting them to see if they have special arrangements as you already have FTM2005.

You would need to check whether the data from your old version will transfer to a new one. If not it might be worth just keeping the old computer just for Family History.

Hi Alison

I would suggest that you take it in separate steps.

eg
Obtain new windows 10 machine
Install FTM2017

Old machine
Copy old tree files onto (say) USB stick
Then do it again  :)

If you have media files/data, stop and review what you need to do.
(reminder = official specification gedcom do not contain media )

If you have NO media files/data, create a new gedcom file WITH A NEW FILENAME.
Import that to FTM2017
Using FTM2017, ensure that you then back it up (more than once) and create a new gedcom (more than once)

[ I would then create a ZoomPast.com account (FREE) then import gedcom into that. ]
You'll be amazed by it, and, should you want to show family, it's online.

If you get stuck/confused . . . . . ask :)
If in doubt, take a backup . . . . .  ;D

As Jane says 2006 ( and later ) works on Win10, I personally haven't tried 2005.The 2005 tree backup files may not import directly ito 2017, may need to go via 2006/8/11 say.

I have used FTM 2005 for years although I also have the 2009 version.  2005 is a much better layout in my opinion.  I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium N

However - I have been having problems retrieving the programme/date and for a long time have had this message

Quote
Driver Installation Error

Windows can't install the Amyuni Document Converter 2.10 kernel-mode print driver.  To obtain a driver that is compatible with the version of Windows you are running, contact the manufacturer

I have managed to work around it for quite a while and can still do so if I am patient and don't mind waiting for it to "co-operate".  I have now installed the 2009 version which I don't like

Somebody suggested that FTM stop supporting older versions of the programme
