Bancroft Place, Manchester or Salford?
« on: Tuesday 27 November 18 07:49 GMT (UK) »
According to Slater's directories my grandfather Joseph Stansfield b1875 Salford ran his Horse Collar manufacturing business from 23a Albert st in 1903 but had moved down the street to 33 Water st by 1909.
His son also named Joseph took over the business. He was interviewed for a newspaper article published in the Manchester Guardian on March 5th 1956 by which time he had moved the business to Southern st, Manchester.
The article says "Times and trade have indeed changed since 1896, when Mr Stansfield's father set up the business at Bancroft Place, in a house overlooking a pair of (disused) gallows."
In 1896 my grandfather was living with his parents in Hampton st, Salford.
Can anyone please tell me where Bancroft Place was.Thank you in advance for your help. Yvonne

Bancroft Place was in King Street West. You can see it on the 1891 Map  at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/383433/398361/13/100874

So all in the same area. Completely different now. I think Joseph junior moved out when Water street had its first make-over in the 1950's. I'll have a look at the census. Thanks for your help. Best wishes, Yvonne
