Today, 27th November, is Lancashire Day. The Lancashire Day Proclamation is read in town centres.

Happy Lancashire Day to all present and past citizens of Lancashire from Lancashire North of the Sands to the Mersey and from the Irish Sea to the Pennines, including those in Manchester and Salford, in Bolton-by-Bowland, Bolton-le-Moors and Bolton-le-Sands and in every Eccleston and Walton.

May Plumptons be peaceful, despite fracking. May Lancashire cheese be ever Tasty and Lancashire Hotpot remain hot.

OK, so the Friends of Real Lancashire are entitled to their bit of fun, but I hope they realise that Bolton-by-Bowland is in the Real West Riding of Yorkshire...

(I have to admit that I once lived in Lancashire. Some of my ancestors also lived there and survived. And as a Yorkshireman who has lived in the south, I also have to admit that a Lancastrian might occasionally be an ally rather than a rival.)

Apparently - but then if you're going to fill a tube with blood and guts and call it food, why waste it chucking it at us lot? Or is that all it's good for?

Having thought of myself as a Lancastrian (although I don't live in Lancashire) it was a shock to discover my ancestor Abraham Broadley, who lived in Darwen from 1654, was actually born in Warley, near Halifax. I do like black pudding and Duckworth Hall near Oswaldtwistle has a new dish in their repertoire which includes it. I do hope that doesn't count as an advert. We just eat there occasionally. cb
