William Green buried 1775 Alstonefield.
« on: Wednesday 28 November 18 15:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find a first marriage (and subsequent death of her first husband) for Sarah Green who married Humphrey Ratcliffe in 1777 at All Saints, Grindon. Sarah was described as a widow, Humphrey a taylor.

A marriage that looks promising is for a William Green marrying Sarah Hulme at St John the baptist, Mayfield. William a Taylor from the parish of Alstonefield.

Hence i am looking for a burial in the Alstonefield area between 1774 & 1777. A possibility is in 1775, but looking at the listing it is for two William Green's both buried on the same day 17/4/1775 at Alstonefield, one from Warslow and the other from Shayfield (or at least that's what it looks like to me), Can anyone suggest if there is any further way I can find out any further information about this double burial- I know it could be a longshot but an MI? and where is Shayfield?

Many thanks for any help
Kev.

Sorry to reply to my own posting,

but if the 1775 burial is not the one i am looking for there is another at Alstonefield on the 24/7/1776 of William Green from Hope, although at the moment I am favouring the 1775 burials.

There's a Mayfield near Alstonefield - your 'Shayfield'?

'wishful thinking' has lots of MIs from Alstonefield and surrounding villages.
http://places.wishful-thinking.org.uk/STS/Alstonfield/MIs.html

I couldn't see your 'Green' family here, but the MIs are not necessarily of everyone in the churchyard.
You might like to look around other villages on the site.

Thanks for the link goldie61, will have a look at other places, there may be other relatives mentioned.

Mayfield could be 'Shayfield', Mayfield is mentioned in other records I was looking at for possible relatives, although the parish register I was looking it definitely looks like Shayfield, but could just be recorded wrongly. Also looking at the 1776 burial, which mentions William Green of Hope, there is another person recorded on the same page as being from Hope Dale. I presumed Hope would the place near Sheffield (thought it was a bit of a distance away from Alstonefield), but could Hope Dale be much nearer Alstonefield (google maps have a few mentions of roads named Hopedale, and there is a Hopedale centre in Leek). Maybe I shouldn't be ruling out this 1776 burial quite so easily.

Regards
Kev.

I remember being confused about people in 'Hope' at Alstonefield in the registers - I have a few of them in my tree. Like you at first I thought it was the village of Hope some miles away.

This site gives a lot of information about places round Alstonefield.https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/staffs/vol7/pp8-27,
and it seems there is still an area of Alstonefield called Hope, south west of Alstonefield village, if you Google it.

Have you got an image from the register where you think it says 'Shayfield?
You could post it on here and we could see what we could make of it.

Hi and many thanks for the link goldie61, will have a look later.

Hopefully attached is the parish entry for the 2 William Greens on the same day (17/4/1775 Alstonefield) - if not back to the drawing board and will try again.

It certainly looks like 'Shayfield' Kev. (image came through fine).
Not a name I remember having looked through dozens and dozens of Alstonefield register pages.

I checked the transcriptions I have - there are lots you can find via archive books on the www. Nothing comes up in a search for Shayfield. Quite strange. I even tried S(outh) hayfield, but nothing. (The town of Hayfield is some 20 miles north in Derbyshire, so unlikely to be that.)

If Sarah was a widow, was the marriage in 1777 by licence? MAY give more info - though unlikely.

There seem to be several William Greens. Is he your ancestor?
Any wills for William Green around that time?

Three wills Alstonefield 1720 - 1780
William Green 1727 'ale seller'/yeoman.
William Green Warslow 1732 'ale seller'
Richard Green 1779 husbandman (might be a brother?)

Also William Green 1778 corwainer - this is only an adminstration. Sometimes it took a few years to prove a will.

These should be viewable on findmypast.

Hi goldie61 and many thanks for your interest and help.

William Green is not a direct ancestor of mine, but Sarah Green (widow) who married Humphrey Ratcliffe in 1777 at Grindon is. That is why I am trying to find a death for William Green before 1777. The 1774 marriage of Sarah Hulme to William Green is looking as favorite  at present, just need a death for William.

Unfortunately the 1777 marriage to Humphrey Ratcliffe (who also was a tailor) was by Banns. However whilst checking noticed the 1774 marriage was by license, William was of Alstonefield and Sarah was from Mathfield.

I am afraid none of the wills are for the William Green I am trying to find, he was a Tailor. Whilst viewing the wills on findmypast I noticed the appreticeship records and there was a record for an apprenticeship record William Green master a Tailor, residence Woolsen. Now if I could only find Woolsen, it may tie in with Shayfield? or one of the other places listed on burial records. Unfortunately haven't located Woolsen so far.
