Thanks for all reply’s. I think this is now confirmed Irwin is the surname!!

findings:

Elizabeth Irwin who married William could well be the daughter of a Spraggon Irwin.

The 1881 census has a Spraggon Irwin and family living in Walker. Among his children is a 3 year old Elizabeth Irwin, born Walker.

IRWIN, ELIZABETH Mothers mn     KNOX
GRO Reference: 1877  D Quarter in TYNEMOUTH  Volume 10B  Page 210

FreeBMD Marriage Dec 1861, Spragon IRWIN/Margaret KNOX on same page

William Thompson married Elizabeth Irwin in 1st q. 1899, Tynemouth

All Elizabeth & Williams Children are registered with the mothers maiden name Irwin.

This is why I love Rootschat!! Your all very helpful thank you x

All looks good.

When you follow Spraggon back on Census I think you will find this is his Parents Marriage;

The church code on the Elizabeth Irwin marriage in 1899 indicates marriage took place at a non-Anglican venue.  Perhaps this might have been at a registry office or an RC Church/Methodist etc.
