Nottingham Archives Look Up
« on: Thursday 29 November 18 19:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have just received my Great x 2 Grandfathers death certificate and was surprised to learn that he died in the Nottingham Union Workhouse on the 15th August 1885 aged 41.
His name was Edward Fernandez.
On the death certificate his profession is a Carver and Gilder of Queens Grove, I am unsure if this was a home address or his employers address.
His wife and family lived in Hull in 1881 on the census, but Edward and my great grandmother were lodgers in Nottingham?
I would love to know why he ended his days in the workhouse and what his circumstances were.
If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it. I am unable to visit Nottingham Archives as I don’t live in Nottingham.

Thank you

Lesley

He probably died in the Infirmary which was part of the WH in those days.  Many medical conditions needed hospital care

Hi Carol

Thank you for replying and sending the attachment re Workhouses.
So it is possible that he was not an inmate but just being treated as he was ill?
Do you know if the the workhouse would have kept any records of patients who were not inmates?
Thanks for your help.
Lesley

What is the cause of death on his death cert?  Does it give an address for him other than the WH?

Both my great grandparents died in the WH infirmary in 1904 and 1905 respectively but were not paupers and had a house (rented).  The type of care they needed was only available in the infirmary

WH records (if they exist) only give bare details - date of admission, next of kin, address, reason for admission.  They do not provide comprehensive details of what treatment he received etc

Hi Carol,

On his death certificate it states that he died at the workhouse, and that he was a carver and gilder of Queens Grove. I am not sure if Queens Grove was his address or his employers address. I don't know who his employer was. The cause of death was congestion of the lungs.

There is a useful 1885 Nottingham directory here:

http://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/digital/collection/p16445coll4/id/278609

It has a section for Carvers and Gilders. Queens Grove does not appear as the address for any of these businesses.

Additionally a search of the entire document for 'Fernandez' doesn't come up with anything, though as the document was published in December 1885 this might only demonstrate its accuracy.
BARTRAM - Nottingham, Derby, originally Beds (Stagsden)
PERFETT - St Pancras & Marylebone, Rugby, Nottingham
RADFORD - Nottinghamshire, also back & forth to Bury
RUDD - Durham, Margate, Bermondsey, Newcastle, Nottingham

Googling Notts WH records looks as though records are available for that period

Hi Rattus,

Thank you for the directory link that you have attached.

I had a look myself and you are right there are no entries for Fernandez or any other variations of this surname.

I appreciate your help and will keep the link for any future references for Nottingham.

Regards Lesley
