1939 look up please
« on: Friday 30 November 18 09:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi, can anyone kindly sort out a mystery by looking up the 1939 census for me?  Twins Evelyn I and Kathleen M were born Dec qtr 1939 and I am wondering if they are on the census for that year?  There are two different families they could belong to:  Edward Speller and his wife Ivy, or George Speller and his wife Margaret.  Both women's maiden names was Gray which makes this query.  They were all born Stratford/West Ham.  Edward was born 1910 and George William Henry was born 1916.  Thanking you.
Speller (Thaxted, Prittlewell, West Ham), Thompson (East Peckham, Romford), Wright (Gt Marlow, Romford, Dagenham, Queensland Australia), Cutler (Herts), Channer (High Wycombe), Baker (Romford, Ilford, Stratford)

Sorry we are not able to do lookups to the 1939 register (not census).  However, it would depend on their actual birthday as to whether they were recorded or not as the register was taken on 29 September 1939 so if born after that then they wouldn't appear anyway.

Ah okay I did wonder what the date of the census was.  Thanks for letting me know.

Here we go again! ;D

The 1939 National Register was NOT a census!

A census is a snapshot of one night.
The 1939 National Register was continually updated (by the NHS) until the 1990's.

The 39 Register was a snapshot of one night!
Where they were on the night is where they were recorded.
Any that were missed and done later, we can't see them anyway.
Some info updated of course.

Firstly, Evelyn and Kathleen might still be alive, so their records may still be closed.

If their births were registered in Oct-Dec 1939, they may have been born in late August or September, so might appear on the register. If they were born later, they will not be on the register.

As Pheno says, rootschat members can't do lookups of the 1939 register. But if you are in the UK, your local library probably has a subscription to Ancestry or Findmypast (or both), including access to the 1939 register. Worth a trip to the library, surely?

Also if either of the Speller-Gray couples have a child b early 1939, they won't be sprogging twins 9 months later. Can you eliminate on that basis?

Both ladies could still be living and therefore should not be named.

However, they both are listed in Electoral registers with their mother so you could look there.
