Wow that's excellent information. Thank you very much. I had made an assumption on the basis of Freebmd showing Richards as the only Clara Jane born in Stroud at that time. So despite my best efforts, yet again this shows that one should never make assumptions - and apologies to Pauline J for dismissing her helpful message too quickly!

I'll follow up on the Ancestry family trees.

I've looked at the addresses shown on the marriage certificate and found them via Google street maps in Troyeville, near Johannesburg. I have the birth dates of all 3 daughters from the 1939 register but if there are records showing the birth of Vida and/or Zoe in South Africa it would be interesting to see if they were still in the same place before moving back to the UK. However, that's a relatively minor detail.
