James BELL
« on: Sunday 02 December 18 01:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Looking for information on the background of a James BELL  abt 1842 Sundsvall (Parish) Vasternorrland, d1925 Dargaville.
Arrived NZ about 1869-70 , no idea from what country. m 1891 Angelina Morgan both are buried in Dargaville, no children.
Naturalisation NZ 1899 per information from Spades (Archives)

His parents are  / Anders / Andersen BELL and Catherine Unknown as per marriage certificate
In the Svenskarna Inya Zeealand book it has Andrew BELL & Catherine Unknown.

I would to know if the family actually come from Sweden as BELL sounds European.

Regards
Kiwiterrier

Sundsvall in Vasternoorland certainly is in Sweden, if that is the question:

Unfortunately I only see 3 archival references directly to Sundsvall:

although that is not to say there aren't others.

Hi
There were a number of Bells in the 1800s also Bäll (pronounced the same) in Sweden. So it is very possible that they were Swedish.

A bit of googling and I came up with;
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1949331

Unfortunately I couldnt find James

Also on another search it appears Sundsvall Records were destroyed in the fire of 1888.

Thanks every one, sorry late in reply have been busy.
Another question would he have been born James or have a Swedish name. My ggrandmother had brother who was named Olaf but was known as James July, just curious.

Hi
I know that Jakob is a Swedish variant of James. Also the name James was used in Sweden at that time as there were quite a large number of James then.
