Where is/was The Estate of Littleclear & Ploughlands???
« on: Sunday 02 December 18 05:00 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone give me any information on this Estate.

My 3rd Great Grandfather, Hugh Lermond/Learmouth/Learmonth, was a farmer and in the 1851 Census he was living at the Ploughlands Farmhouse on the estate, farming 280 acres and employing 7 labourers. In the 1841 Census his address was just given as Ploughlands, Maxton.

The only thing I can find on present-day maps is a road called Ploughlands in the Maxton area.

Cheers, Doug

This might be of interest too.

It's Littledean, not Littleclear. My great-grandfather Thomas Wight Stephenson was born in 1847 at Littledean. His maternal grandfather William Wight was a farmer and carter in Maxton, William's mother's family, the Thomsons, were long-time farmers there, and William's father-in-law Robert Richardson was a blacksmith and an elder of Maxton church.

If you enter Littledean OR Ploughlands in the search field here
http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/search.aspx
you will get details of any relevant holdings.

Some are tacks [leases]; I haven't looked through them but who knows - may concern your family. Ploughlands was unlikely to be a name limited to this farm/area.

This one looks interesting, with change of name for Ploughlands

This one looks interesting, with change of name for Ploughlands

Alwardane, called Plewlands

It does look like a change of name but it's only a change of accent/pronunciation, "plew/ploo/pleu/plough"  :D
