Locating marriage Eliz Jane Chequer to ? Perk 1885-1900
« on: Sunday 02 December 18 05:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I have problem regarding a marriage sometime between 1885 & 1900 approx.

Amongst the many names my wife has in her tree is an Eliza Jane Chequer. She was born 1872 (18-2-1872 per 1939 register) in the Cricklade dist. to William & Mary Ann).

Recently I came across a marriage certificate that lists Eliza Perk (d/o William Chequer - dec'd) marrying Maurice Twining 19-11-1901 in Wroughton, Wilts. They are listed as Widower & Widow.

I can find details about Maurice Twining's 1st wife etc. but am having great difficulty in finding out
anything regarding Eliza's 1st marriage. Initially I thought it may have been an error (widow) but
she actually signs "Eliza Perk" in the register.

I've tried F/Search, FreeBMD, FreeReg and Ancy all with no success.

Any help with this problem would be most appreciated.

Alan

How strange!  Have you found her in 1901 just prior to her marriage??

I couldn't see an Eliza Perk in 1901 but did find an Eliza   Chequer age 29 b Broad Town, Wiltshire who was working as a cook at Russley Park, Bishopstone, Swindon working for the Robinson family. She is listed as single  :-\

Kay

Added - One of my relatives had an illigimate child and changed her name and listed herself as a widow to conceal  this when she later married.   Could this have been the case re Eliza??

Hi Kay,
Yes - I have got her in the 1901 census the same as you as Eliza Chequer. She marries later that year.
I'll try an attach a pic of the relevant marraiage cert, if possible. Won't allow it
Have not found evidence of any children but in the 1911 census she is listed with her spouse and 4 chidren the eldest being born in Richmond, London. What you say is a possibilty. Will have to explore more.

Possibilities?
Herbert Perk, 2, in Swindon in 1901

An admission record,  Lethbridge Road School, Swindon
Bert Twining, born 1898
Might have a (full) date of birth?

As husband Maurice had no child named Herbert/Bert of the right age in 1901 Bert does look to be Eliza'a child
