Seeking help to try to find where Richard Cushing died
« on: Sunday 02 December 18 05:51 GMT (UK) »
I have Richard Cushing, born 20 Feb 1818 at Fakenham, Norfolk, England to William Cushing and Elizabeth Lord.

In 1851 he was certified as being a mate and master in the British Merchant Service in Costal and Foreign Trade. Certificate No: 37.072, Date 13 Mar 1851.

I have the record of his claims for master, from 1824 as an apprentice to mate on the Era for New Found Land 24 Oct 1850

He problem I have is: where did he die. There are several Ancestry trees which have him dying at sea, BUT where. Some have him off New Jersey, USA, and others in the Indian Ocean. Just a slight difference in longitude. :P

Does anyone out there have any idea where I can find out the “facts”, as opposed to theories.

Any Assistance would be very gratefully accepted.

He was baptised at Kings Lynn on 22 February 1813, The baptism register says he was born on 20 February, but his board of trade papers say he was born 14 February 1813 at Lynn. The 1851 census gives his birthplace as Lynn.

The last reference I can find for him is on the Granville at Calcutta in 1855.

Oops, sorry about that, I plead fat fingers.

Thank you for that information, ShaunJ.  Could you tell me where you found it, as I have not been able to work out how to find that sort of information

The birthdate came from the masters certificate

The 1855 Calcutta reference came from this record (last one on the page)

Thanks for that ShaunJ.

Unfortunately, I will have to go to the library to get that, as I do not have a FindMyPast subscription, and the first thing I get is the pay up screen.

I will be going on Monday, so will try then.

Again many thanks.
