Census query
« on: Sunday 02 December 18 09:05 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,

Does anyone know how the occupants of prison hulk ships were recorded? Were they recorded in the county in which they were sitting or nearest or elsewhere on seperate schedules? I can see that Find My Past have a separate register for prisoners on hulks but where would I find staff?

Did you try  searching by occupation in the keyword box?

https://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8860 (1851 as example)

You don't say where you are Interested in or the date, but the 1851 census entry for
Kent Woolwich Woolwich Arsenal Convict Hulk Establishment, Hebe, Wye, and Unite is at  HO107; Piece: 1589; Folio: 454; Page: 1 and lists the staff.

Pauline and Stan,

My apologies, I have only just seen your replies and will follow up both suggestions, thankyou.

Not sure about which hulk - we have a letter that refers to his early career and mentions ships. He was a teacher, religious instructor in prisons so I was wondering if his absence from the 1841 census was because he was on a hulk or even a ship off to the colonies with prisoners. He was married and had children but was away from home on the night of the census.
