Ralph Allen
« on: Sunday 02 December 18 10:29 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace Ralph Allen and wondered if anyone else has researched him.
He was the Father of Mary Jane Allen who married Elijah Ludford Lockwood in Leicestershire (Barrow upon Soar) in 1838.
On the Marriage certificate of Mary and Elijah Ralph is described as being a River Pilot who lived in Talbot Lane.
Mary Jane seems to have been born around 1816 (probably but not definitely in Leicestershire). I'm guessing Ralph married 1800 to 1815 and must have been born around 1765 to 1780.

On the marriage certificate both Elijah and Mary Jane's address is given as 'Talbot Lane' - Ralph Allen simply described as 'Pilot'.

In 1851 Elijah (transcribed as Elizah) Lockwood and Mary Jane (listed as Jane) are in Birmingham.  She is shown as bc.1808 'At Sea'.

Mary Jane Lockwood remarried Mar.qtr.1861 to a Samuel George - in 1861 they are in Birmingham with her grand-daughter 2 born in Aldershot.   Once again, Mary Jane's birth is shown as ca.1808 'At Sea'.

So how do we identify her father Ralph Allen when she herself is born at sea?

Not Barrow upon Soar. They were married at St Mary's in Leicester.

The 1841 census lists an Allen family at Wrights Yard in Talbot Lane: Thomas Allen 50, woolcomber, Mary Allen 55 and John Allen, 20, woolcomber. All born out of county. Relatives perhaps?

The 1838 marriage witnesses were Francis William Hollyoake and Mary Hollyoake. Mary Jane Allen was a witness to the marriage of Francis William Hollyoake and Mary Attkins in 1837.
