George Armitage and Kezia Richards
« on: Sunday 02 December 18 10:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I've hit a bit of a dead-end with George and Kezia Armitage. Working backwards:

1861:

George   Armatage   Head         Married   Male      54   1807   Mason   Yorkshire, England
... [Kezia]  Armatage   Wife         Married   Female 54   1807   -   -
George   Armatage   Son         Unmarried   Male      22   1839   Moulder   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
Jemima   Armatage   Daughter Unmarried   Female 20   1841   -           Barnsley, Yorkshire,
Samuel   Armatage   Son          Unmarried   Male      18   1843   Mason   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
Benjamin   Armatage   Son          Unmarried   Male      16   1845   Moulder   Rotherham, Yorkshire

'Kezia' is clearly a tricky name to transcribe. It's also tricky (for me at least) to read where George and Kezia where born. I've attached an image of this section of document - maybe you can read it?!

1851:

George     Arimatige   Head          Married   Male           45   1806   Mason   Hall Green, Yorkshire
Kezia       Arimatige   Wife          Married   Female   44   1807   -   Nottingham
John          Arimatige   Son          Unmarried   Male           16   1835   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire
Ann          Arimatige   Daughter   -           Female   15   1836   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
William     Arimatige   Son   -                    Male   13   1838   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
George     Arimatige   Son   -                    Male   12   1839   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
Jemima    Arimatige   Daughter   -            Female   10   1841   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
Samuel     Arimatige   Son   -                    Male   8   1843   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire,
Benjamin   Arimatige   Son   -                    Male   5   1846   Scholar   Rotherham, Yorkshire
Arthur       Arimatige   Son   -                    Male   2   1849   -   Rotherham, Yorkshire

In 1841:

George Armitage   Male           30   1811   Yorkshire, England
Cassia  Armitage   Female   30   1811   -
John      Armitage   Male           6   1835   -
Ann      Armitage   Female   5   1836   Yorkshire, England
William Armitage   Male           4   1837   Yorkshire, England
George Armitage   Male           3   1838   Yorkshire, England
Jemima Armitage   Female   1   1840   Yorkshire, England

I have found a marriage record from Nottinghamshire in 1830:

First name(s)   George
Last name   Armitage
Name note   -
Marriage year   1830
Marriage date   26 Jul 1830
Marriage place   Radford
Spouse's first name(s)   Kezia
Spouse's last name   Richards
County   Nottinghamshire

Which is the only marriage I ca find between a George Armitage and a 'Kezia'. I've played around with other spellings of 'Kezia' but haven't found anything else.

I cannot find a plausible Kezia Richards in the parish records anywhere, and I am struggling to narrow down the number of George Armitage possibilities (understanding his birth place would help!).

Anything you can suggest would be much appreciated :)

Is it possibly Hilson in Derbyshire.  Asking Mr G, there are papers at TNA for a soldier who says he was born in Hilson, Derbyshire.

Added:  George is said to be born "Yorkshire, New Mill Dam".  Genuki says it should be suggest New Miller Dam
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

The childrens' birth registrations confirm that Kezia's maiden surname was RICHARDS.

Am not related to these Armitages, though the name is one of "mine",  but am charmed by the different spellings of  the name.
Have not come across these renderings before.
And I often wonder why a more sound-based spelling such as" Armutedge" does not sometimes appear on old documents. Maybe because it was such a strong West Yorks name that everyone knew how to spell it.
Most names seem to have been prone to prononciation based spellings at times eg Hirst written as Hirsch, Briggs as Bridge.
