Can't find grave
« on: Sunday 02 December 18 15:37 GMT (UK) »
Mt grand-mother died in April 1941 in Glasgow. She lived in Partick.

I cannot find her grave after looking in all Cemetery records in Familysearch. Anyone got any suggestions/help. Many thanks.

Have you tried this site?

www.glasgowfamilyhistory.org.uk/ExploreRecords/Pages/Burial-Lair-and-Cremation-Registers.aspx

It has lots of information about how to find a record of a burial or cremation.  Failing that, I suppose you could write to each cemetery in Glasgow and ask them if they would kindly look at their records for April 1941.

Have you tried looking for obituary in the local paper as this may give the name or place of burial.

thank you.

I've been to Mitchell Lib and looked up West Nec, The Necropolis, Lambhill and St Kentigerns.

Not tried papers. Suppose Evening Times is in Mitchell?

It may be an idea to check whether hubby pre-deceased her & if so, where?

I think I would be looking at the nearest cemetery/graveyard to their home address for whoever died 1st & religion may have been a decider on where?

Just an idea for now.

Religion could very well be a factor on where she is buried. Some of my Catholic ancestors from Partick are buried miles away in St Peter's Catholic cemetery at Dalbeth, as far east in the city of Glasgow as it is possible to be. Others are in St Kentigern's Catholic cemetery at Lambhill, in the north-west of the city.
Rosinish is correct in both comments. If your grandfather died first, where is he buried, also any infant children they may have lost, she may be with them.

Hi polarstarr,

Not sure if you have checked the Glasgow Herald archives but may be worth a shot.  If you know your grandmother's date of death will be easier, otherwise will be more time consuming.

Happy to help with the search if you wish to share more detail either on here or by PM.

Hello

I had similar experience. I found nothing after checking all the sources mentioned above and the cemeteries listed in Familysearch.

I also contacted NHS archives to try and see if she went from hospital to cemetery - no success.

How can a person die in 1940's Glasgow and there appears to be no written record? Even burials in common ground or paupers grave is recorded isn't it??

Evening Times or the Citizen for death notices, the better off died in the Glasgow Herald. Southern Necropolis, Sighthill, Riddrie even Cadder or the Necropolis or Clydebank, depending on where the family had a lair.
