Looking for Descendants of Adam Scott and Janet Leithead
« on: Monday 03 December 18 02:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am compiling a tree regarding the above couple, to see if I can locate any descendants. Reason for this is I am trying to see if these MIGHT be the correct parents of my Adam Scott who married Mary Gillanders. - I have his full family details. I have had a direct male line descendant do a YDNA test as well as a number of other cousins, Aunts etc take Autosomal tests. As this will be the only way to prove a possible line back in the Roxburghshire area.

This couple had the following children:
John Scott b c1811 d 1835
Gladstone Scott b c1813 m Isabella Wilson d 1890
Helen Scott b c1816 d 1830
Thomas Scott b 1818 m Janet/Jenny Davidson d
William Scott b 1820 d 1829
Charles Scott b 1823 m Isabella Hope  d 1896
Walter Scott b c1827 d
William Scott b c1829 m Jane Hope d 1865
James Scott b c1831 d
David Scott b Sept1834 d 1835
(I am still working on gathering details about the above children)
Areas of most interest are: Cavers, Priesthaugh hill, Hawick - Majority of the boys followed their Fathers line of work as being a Shepherd. My Adam Scott states on a 1855 birth of his son, he was born in Priesthaugh hill, and his occupation throughout his life was also a Shepherd.

My Adam Scott was born c1825 and would fit into this family re time frames as well as all the family names very nicely, but I need to be able to prove it.
So going to post this on this site as well as Selkirk and Dumfries to see if any descendants belong and are interested in making contact to see if we can solve this puzzle.
Looking forward to hearing from anyone relating to these families.
Kind regards
Ailsa Corlett

thanks Annie,
Yes Gladstone is a name carried down on my Adam Scott's family. His son Kenneth named one of his son's John Gladstone Scott born 1905 in Wellington NZ. My Adam and all his family apart from eldest son, immigrated to NZ and I have a very large and full details of each line coming down. My Adam Scott and Mary Gillanders, tended to use family names for their children. Eg. ones that have Gillanders as middle names definitely relate to the Gillanders family names, and the ones without do relate the Scott family - common of which are Adam, John, Thomas, Charles, and Walter.
The Gladstone name comes from Janet Leithead's Father who was Gladstone Leithead married to Helen Hall, and the John most likely from Adam's Father (this is the Adam Scott married to Janet Leithead), whose parents were John Scott and Isabella Blaikie.
I think along with some other cousins who have been working on this theory for some years that this is most likely the correct family. All names carried down in the next generations tend to match, hence today decided to make an effort to see if any descendants are out there to talk to.
regards Ailsa

Allsac, if the birth date is correct 1825 the only one for that date in Roxburghshire is one Adam christened 11 th April; 1825 ECKFORD  PARENTS SIMON SCOTT MARY WRIGHT REF 787.A/2 AND ~FR339 (IN OLD PARISH RECORDS)

I DONT SEE SIMONS MARRIAGE IN ROXBURGHSHIRE//SELKIRKSHIRE
turnbull- Scottish Borders ,Caithness and East Lothian
waddell-roxburghshire
foord/ford -perthshire and borders
crosbie-scot borders
galloway-scot borders

Just because there is only one possible candidate in the surviving records does not mean that it has to be the right one. Not everyone's baptism records, if they ever existed, have survived.

There must be thousands of people who have climbed the wrong tree because they made that assumption.

Adam stated on an 1855 birth certificate that he was born at Priesthaugh Hill. According to Scotland's Places this is in the parish of Teviothead: Priesthaugh-hill: On the West bank of Priesthaugh Burn. A cottage on the farm of Priesthaugh, Occupied by William Armstrong, the property of the Duke of Buccleuch
See https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=55.31505&lon=-2.84403&layers=5&b=1
and https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/61393 (though this house is too recent to be the one where Adam was born).

Have you seen the baptism records of Charles and Walter? If they were both born at Priesthaugh Hill, and Adam says he was born there, that is quite strong evidence for him being their brother.

Where and when did Adam die? Have you seen his death certificate?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

ALLSAC YOU SAID HE WAS BORN 1825 now you mention a birth certificate dated 1855 I am only trying to help. when and where was he married to Janet Leithead. also when and where did Adam Scott marry Gilander? I have the SCOTT church records for Selkirk and Roxburghshire .After 1855 they had to register births and marriages and should be on S People. also what about the census from 1841.
LETS START WITH CONFIRMED DATES OF MARRIAGE AS ABOVE AND THEN I WILL SEE WHAT I CAN FIND.  DIFFERENT DATES OF BIRTH 30YRS APART IS A NON STARTER.

The birth certificate in 1855 was that of one of Adam's children, and the information on that certificate is that Adam himself, the child's father, was born at Priesthaugh Hill in 1825.

Forfarian. I am 81 and have been involved in genealogy for at least 30 yrs and have never seen a birth certificate showing the birth dates  and place of the parents. . Scottish birth certs often will show wheRe and  when the parents were married  ,the place where the baby was born but no birth details of the parents. Send me a copy of this birth certificate to show I am wrong. You need the birth certs of the parents and they will show their parents after 1855 but before then church records vary sometimes showing son of  Adam or Daughter  of whoever but never have I seen son of Adam born etc at etc giving the details you claim.
Sorry but unless I see the certificates you claim I won’t be looking to help you. Genealogy is having documentary proof not speculation .

In that case you have never seen an 1855 birth certificate. Among the information collected on 1855 birth certificates are the age and birthplace of both parents. See the attached, which is an extract of a page of births registered in Fife in 1855. If this is insufficient evidence please PM me your e-mail address and I will send you the complete page and any others I happen to have as well.

I don't have the one under discussion here, because this is not my family. Like you, I am merely attempting to help the original poster.
