War photo - anyone know date? soldier Alf
« on: Monday 03 December 18 12:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi there, would anyone be able to tell me the date you think this photo was taken? It is my cousin's photograph. We are not sure who it is but it does say on the bottom - best wishes Alf. So persumably Alf would be the one in the photo?

I am assuming it's WW1 but I'm not sure. If anyone could tell me anything else about it by the uniform etc. I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you in advance.

Vicky

I agree that WW1 is likely, but the same sort of uniform was in use to the late 1930s, when battledress was introduced.
The photo is not sharp enough for me to make out the cap badge or shoulder title.  Can you get a better scan?  Someone with better eyes might pick out more detail.

That would make sense as it's probably a relative from the Essex side of London.
Thank you both

Hi Vicky...This might help....as this is a photo of a photo, it would be better if you could scan it at a resolution of 300dpi.

Agree Essex Regt. The only other info is that he's wearing the post 1915 economy tunic so probably so didn't join until 1916. Maybe 1916 was the year he reached 18 or a he's a conscript.

I'd agree the uniform looks like a WW1 dress uniform. I'm guessing it's post war and from the greeting of "Good Luck and Best Wishes, Alf", it reads to me like a note sent to a soon-to-be wed or newlywed couple.

Just my two cents.

Dr. Dude
I just like to do photo restores.

Do you think the man in the picture is Alf or do you think the one sending it is Alf,?
