Unable to find mother's name - 14th Regiment foot, birth in Canada

Hi,
  I have the father, William Miller (1811, Clontibret, Monaghan) who served in the 14th Regiment  (#615) of Foot in the West Indies and Canada.  His son was born in Kingston Ontario in 1841 whilst the father is serving there.  The son, James Miller also served in the 14th Regiment of Foot (#843) from 5/11/1858 to 1881.
  William retired back in Monaghn and James in Yorkshire.  I have been unable to find a marriage record for William or birth record for James so I cannot find the mother.  James's eldest daugher was called Mary, 2nd Catherine and another Teresa 'Mary'.  James's 1st son was James 'William' and the next John 'Henry'.   Just wondering if his mother was 'Mary' and her parents maybe Henry and Mary or Catherine.
  Anyway, any help finding the marriage for William or birth of James would be really appreciated.

I've subscribed to FindMyPast and found an entry which I think is him

You will have to order the birth certificate from the GRO with that reference in the usual way.

So the birth cert was delivered. The mother is just listed as Elizabeth. No surname.

He was stationed in Canada at the time of his sons birth. I'm surprised that he has a wife with him in Canada.

Do you think she travelled from the UK with the regiment or if he married her there? I can't find a military record of a marriage.

How frustrating for you.

Have you found them in any census which gives an indication of Elizabeth's birth place? That should give you a staring point as to where to look for a marriage.

 Given what you have said so far it is quite possible they could have married in Canada, or Elizabeth could have been born in England or Ireland and/or been the daughter or widow of another soldier, or possibly Canadian.
There are many options to investigate.

What a pity.  The witnesses are obviously local where you would expect a fellow soldier to be a witness this one is a local militia and not English.

There is one William Miller in the Canada West (Ontario) 1842 census listed as a farmer and living in a 'dwelling house' with a lot of other men.  That is the Canadian Gov website.  I've also searched the FS Canada Upper and Lower census of 1842 and there are a few William Miller but only one Elizabeth Miller who is not resident in the same place as any of them.

William was discharged from the Army in 1843 in Monaghan in Ireland and of course there are no surviving census for there.  I cannot find a death record for Elizabeth Miller in that area in Ireland that corresponds to any areas I've linked to William.

More hunting to do :-)
