William was discharged from the Army in 1843 in Monaghan in Ireland and of course there are no surviving census for there.

William Miller, 615, Colour Serjeant, 14th Regiment Of Foot, was discharged in October 1852.
WW Army Index has him in Athlone, Ireland, in the first quarter of 1851.

Son James likely to have been conceived whilst William and the 14th Foot were stationed in the West Indies? If they were still there until the beginning of May 1841.
https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=M2nIHm-DXegC&pg=PA31&lpg=PA31&dq=#v=onepage&q&f=false
(see also ww army index 1841)

William's record in WO 97 says that he served six and a half years in North America.
Have you checked for any other possible births?

other possible births?

Any thoughts?
There's John Miller, regiment 14th, Kingston, Canada, 1844
and then John Miller, ditto, Quebec 1846 :o

It's perhaps interesting that William is the seemingly the only Miller in the indexed musters for the 14th Foot in both 1841 and 1851.

According to Army pension records, William Miller, 14th Foot, died 30.8.1874, probably in the Manchester area.
He'd been there from (appx) the early sixties?

Possible death?
Sep 1874 Salford 8d 96
Miller, William
age 63

There's an interesting William Miller in Salford in 1871, but wife here is Ellen
piece 4026 folio 95 page 8
Worsley St. West
William Miller Head Married 60 Staff Sergeant of Pensioner?
Ellen Miller Wife Married 41
Elizabeth Miller Daur 17 Pupil Teacher
All three born Ireland

Could Ellen be a second wife? Well she would have to be, if is the right William!

Going back to that Salford family in 1871
A marriage at St Bartholomew, Salford, 4 Sep 1878
Robert Moore, 26, Bachelor, Traveller
+
Elizabeth Miller, 24, Spinster, School Mistress, residence is an address in Mirfield, father William Miller, Deceased, Pensioner

Could be them in Chorlton in 1891, Elizabeth is 37, born Ireland.

Interesting that Robert was born in Malta, his father on the marriage was also a Pensioner.

Hi Jon,
thank you for all this searching.  His discharge was in Limerick, Ireland and address on his discharge papers address as Aughnalough, Clontibret, Monaghan.  Likely then his daughter was born there before moving to Manchester. His son was in the same regiment and settled in Yorkshire.
I saw the other births in Canada, John and Robert both in 1844 and both 14th Foot.  I'll have to order the certs.
How did you find Manchester in the pension records?
thanks
Paul
