Martin family Sussex

I’m hoping I’m posting in the right section I’m hoping to work out my 5 x great grandmother Martha Martin she married Francis Edwin in 1805 in Liss Hampshire.  I’m in Australia so searching is a little limited.  According to the 1841 census she was born around 1781 but not in Liss.   I had thought I could not go much further with Martha but then my dad has DNA matches to the Martin family from Robertsbridge in Sussex.  Funnily enough the descendants dad matches to are also living in West Australia.  What caught my eye is that Martha names her first son Newland which seems to be a name used quite a bit with the Martin family my dad matches too.  They have an Easton Martin b 1750 married to Mary Newland with a son John Martin b 1776. 

I can’t find any records for an Easton Martin so I’m unsure if this is incorrect.  These matches dad has then descend from John’s son William 1806. 

So I’m hoping someone might help me connect the dots.

Did William b 1806 marry a Lucy and have a son Newland baptised at Salehurst on 10 December 1827?

If so, have you been able to trace back from them at all (in your own independent research)?

Yes this is the family my dad has matched too via DNA.  I’ve checked their trees and noted that Newland has been used a few times which is what made me think Martha might belong somewhere with this Martin family but I’ve not been able to connect the dots and seems the trees I’ve looked also don’t have records I can see unless they’ve found them elsewhere.

Parish register says that both Francis Edwin and Martha Martin were widowed when they married in 1805.
Marriage was at Upwaltham in Sussex.

Not sure that they were very good at keeping the records in Upwaltham.
There are not a lot of marriages there, but there still seems to be a bit of a gap in the banns register!
The BT for 1805 says
N.B. No Marriage, the year 1805

Sadly no banns back to 1805 for Eartham are listed on FamilySearch .

Go back to image 607, Upwaltham, and we have the marriage of Francis Edwin and Lydia Leggat, 21 May 1793

Looks as though Lydia was buried 31 January 1802 in East Dean.

She and Francis had a couple of children baptized in East Dean, one was a daughter Jane in December 1801 (previous image, BT). Jane was also buried there in January 1802.

Note that Francis Edwin had witnessed the previous marriage in Upwaltham to his own with Martha. That one was in 1803.
As to the 1805 marriage witnesses, John Coles seems to have been a regular (not too regular in Upwaltham!). Thomas Sanders was the other one. He may be more interesting perhaps.

So this could mean Martha may not have been a Martin by birth after all?  The name Newland she gives her son ... perhaps she’s a Newland and not a Martin? 

Will see if there is a Martha Newland married to a Martin perhaps?
