Could he have been in jail for a henious crime and his family disowned him?

He appears to have gone missing for a long time on two occasions.

2dandan, it has been considered, but we have found no prison records, nor British newspaper archive reports.

Sometimes initials are used on census returns from institutions, but the person may be 'findable' via age and birthplace.
Also if he was using a different name, or just listed with an incorrect name/surname, have you tracked all the children from marriage 1, to see if he is 'with' or 'near' any of them?  Or even any of his siblings?

sorry you've probably been down all these avenues, but another thought on the matter.   :)
