John Skriving and family
« on: Wednesday 05 December 18 11:30 GMT (UK) »
I have a John Skriving born 1866 London living in 1871 with grandparents James and Hannah Leach in Kirkby Thore, Westmorland.    His parents also living in Kirkby Thore are:   John b1844 Glos, Sarah b1844 Devon (dau of James and Hannah and with her mo 1861 unmarried), children Harriet b1867 Herts, George b1868 London and Mary Ann b1871 Westmorland.    The surname on both addresses in the census is Skriving.    I have tried every combination of this surname and can find no birth details, further census addresses - nothing.   Now at my wits end - Sarah is the sister of a Norah Ann Leach who I also had immense problems with (thankfully solved by rootschatters!!!)

hopefully I will be rescued yet again!

The General Register Office (GRO) has the birth registration of a

Mary Ann Scriven, Mar Qtr 1871, East Ward, 10b  618  - mother's maiden name Hewitt.

The Mary Ann on the '71 Census is 2 mth old - the registration district is "East Ward" - possibility?

Can you find birth details for the other children?

Wonder if John is not John ie Robert John or something else  :-\

When did parents marry?  He could be under Leach if born before they tied the knot.

John Robert SCRIVENS (mmn HEWETT) registered Q1 1866 Hendon 3a 121. Maybe the birth date on the baptismal register is a year out?

The other children also have possible birth registrations with mmn HEWETT or similar.

Hi everybody

many thanks for your replies:

Hewitt/Hewett is coming up on a few of the births under Scriven.   No marriage for a Leach/Hewitt in those time frames.    On 1881, 1891 census John b Glos and Sarah b Bradon Edge Devon fit but still not 100% sure that Skriving is Scriven(s)

What I can't figure out is where 'Bradenage/variants, Devon' was - this doesn't seem to have existed under any spelling.
