Might just possibly(!) mean Bradninch.

Now why didn't I think of that - that's it and fits in with what I've unravelled.

First I found James and Hannah Leech in Guernsey on the 1851 census:

James Leech  30    Ag. Lab.
Hannah Leech 32
Sarah Leech 7
John Leech 5
Robert Leech 3

Just states all born England - however, although shown as Leech the surname of the 3 children should read Hewett!

The Sarah Hewett b.1844 Tiverton (mentioned earlier) shows mmn as Chaplen.
I then found a John William Hewett b.1845 Totnes, mmn Chaplin.
Haven't found an obvious birth entry for Robert Hewitt bc.1848.

This Sarah Hewett is clearly the one who married John Scriven 1866 and in 1871 her eldest son John is living, as you know, with James and Hannah Leech as grandson!

So I then looked for a marriage between a James Leech and Hannah Hewett and eventually found it:

James Leech, bachelor, son of William Leech, Tailor
Hannah Hewitt, widow, dau. of John Chaplin, shoemaker

Married 12/2/1850 Chepstow, Monmouthshire

I then looked for a baptism in Bradninch (thank you jonw65) of a Hannah Chaplin:

Hannah Chaplin bp.22/2/1817 Bradninch, dau. of John Chaplin and Sarah (his occupation cordwainer, i.e. shoemaker)

What I can't find, however, is a marriage between a Mr. Hewett/Hewitt and Hannah Chaplin.   Alas, the 3 Hewett children do not appear to have been baptised so can't find fathers name that way.

Certainly a family with wanderlust.

wow,  you are a star!!!!     I saw the Hewett connection but discarded it.    I also thought of earlier marriages but could not find any !!!!(age thing I think)    What a family this is turning out to be.    Sarahs sister Norah Ann gave me great problems as well (solved, of course, by rootschatters!)

many, many thanks to you all for all your help

There's an 1840 civil marriage record for Hannah Chaplin and William Hewitt, Tiverton, Devon.

On the '41 Census William (age 25) and Hannah (age 20) Hewett are living in Fore Street, Bradninch, Tiverton.

Just discovered William Hewett and Hannah Chaplin had other children too:

Sarah Chaplin Hewett   birth Sept.1841 Tiverton, death Dec.1841 Tiverton
William Hewett   birth Dec.1842 Tiverton
Jane Hewett  birth Jun.1845 Tiverton
Twins - Roseannah Hewett     birth Jun.1849 Chepstow, death Sept.1849 Chepstow
           Susannah Hewett             ditto                                  ditto

Poor Hannah - losing her husband and newly born twins at roughly the same time.

Annette

thanks.   I dont think Jane fits in as we already have John William born 1845 Dec Q.   I see William b1842 also dies in Sep Q 1849, so that is four at the same time???
