Crest of Blackburne family, north west England
« on: Wednesday 05 December 18 16:22 GMT (UK) »
The family’s crest of a cock and trumpet used to appear on pubs of that name, particularly near Liverpool.  Most seem to have flown away.

Does anyone have an illustration of the crest which I could use in a small piece on local history please?

Burke's General Armory says:

Blackburne (Orford and Hale, co. Lancaster). Ar. a fesse nebulae betw. three mullets sa., quartering Norbis, Leveb, AsHTON, Green, Aspenwall, Ireland, Hutt, Hesketh,
Holland, Columbers, Walton, Merton, Bebbington, Handford, Praers, Birkenhead, Huoheslt, Done, Kingslet, and Stretch.

Crest—A cock ppr. standing upon a trumpet or.

The trumpet would be of the post-horn style, or as used by the military.
"ppr" means proper - i.e. in natural colours.

Something very similar on a Lever CoA:

Or in Edinburgh:

(About half-way down the page!)

Excellent!  I used to have one like that, but like the pub signs, long gone.  Thank you.

Here's an illustration of the Blackburn crest from Fairbairn's Crests.
