Mary Ann Nichols 1823 - ?
« on: Wednesday 05 December 18 17:28 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help with an abode for the parents of Mary Ann Nichols.
Her baptism record on Ancestry (London Church of England Births & Baptisms 1813 - 1917) shows her parents as William & Sarah Nichols, he was a bookbinder & the baptism was at St.Dunstan & All Saints Stepney, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex.
The problem I have is trying to identify the parents abode at the time. It looks like WROT or similar.
This address occurs for 6 other Nichols children between 1809 & 1828 all baptised at the same church.
Also what are the chances of there being more than one family with the parents William & Sarah Nichols where he was a bookbinder & having 12 children between 1809 & 1828 in Tower Hamlets and  1 child who was baptised at St.Leonards, Shoreditch.

Regarding the baptisms at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, I note the abode on a number of baptisms on the same pages have the same initials, most are badly written so difficult to be precise W.R.O.T or M.R.O.S or something else.

I could only find 3 on A….y prior to 1813 = All baptised 1809 born 1804/06/09
I could only find 4 after 1813 = 1823/1824/1826/1828

So a gap between 1809 & 1823, unless they are the ones below?

The father on the following baptisms was also a Bookbinder.

Henry Nicholls   14 Nov 1813   Spitalfields Christ Church with St Mary and St Stephen   Tower Hamlets   William,Sarah
John Alfred Nicholls   14 Nov 1813   Spitalfields Christ Church with St Mary and St Stephen   Tower Hamlets   William,Sarah

James Callander Nichols   22 Jun 1817   Shoreditch St Leonard   Hackney   William,Sarah

Charles Nichols   2 Aug 1820   Bethnal Green St Matthew   Tower Hamlets   William,Sarah
Frederick Nichols   2 Aug 1820   Bethnal Green St Matthew   Tower Hamlets   William,Sarah

Thanks for both replies.
Tazzie it does now look like MEOT now you have explained but on the earlier records 1809 it looks like MENT (perhaps it wasn't classed as old then)
Colin You are correct with all the records you managed to get.
I was going to add a spreadsheet but the system will not allow me to.

Hi so you are aware Mary Ann Nichols married possibly 15th May 1843 St John, Hoxton, Hackney.
John Thomson Full age occ Boot Shoe Maker Father John Thomson occ Boot Shoe Maker
Mary Ann Nichols Minor Father William Nichols occ Bookbinder
One of the witnesses was a Sarah Nichols
Both of Leonard Street.
The only reason I have posted this, is that you do not show a death date for Mary Ann?

Thank you everyone, you may gather that I am not too aware of all the London areas such as Mile End New & Old towns (me being from Scotland).
Keyboard66 this is fantastic news from you especially regarding the 1841 census.
I have only recently started to investigate all the children of William & Sarah due to the fact I originally had an 1841 census which showed him as a silk weaver which I thought strange as according to the baptism of John Alfred who was my wife's 2nd great grand father William was a bookbinder.
The reason I think it is all one family is that if there had been more than one then the chances of a clash in baptism dates would be quite high.

Hi again, was the Louisa E on 1841 actually baptised as Elizabeth Louisa Nichols, as ther is a marriage at the same Church as Mary Ann of an Elizabeth Louisa Nichols with father William occ Gentleman.
She married a Henry Mander May in 1848 and from 1851 census looks to have been born c 1827?

Both baptised at St.Dunstan & All Saints Stepney.
