I still can't find him in 1891 even using Family Search.  How old was he in 1891?

Who did he marry and when?

Can you please supply the Reference for the 1891 entry - it starts RG12 - then Piece number ... folio ... page

In 1891 he was named as being 17 years old.

He married Mary Ann Doran 30/01/1892 at St Peter's, Liverpool.

Just thought on, on the marriage certificate, he says he is 24 years.

RG12; Piece 2946; Folio 63; Page 50

Thanks

1891 entry is mis-transcribed on Ancestry as Patter and Robert is transcribed as Benjamin???

Robert is a mariner in 1891 but as in my previous replies - a barge boatman in 1881 and 1901

John is 17 giving a birth year of 1873/74

Going back to your opening post - the birthdate on the second baptism at St Peters is an exact match to the one you found on the 1939 register

Unfortunately he appears to have been their only child so we can't compare Catherine's maiden name with any other birth entries.

It may be that Robert was C of E but Catherine was Catholic hence the 2 baptisms - one in an RC church and the other in an Anglican one.  The priest probably just made an error with his birthdate

Ahh okay, would that be a thing they would maybe do?

Thanks for your help! :)

As the second ceremony was in a Catholic church it would be usual for the priest to write "sub conditione",  sometimes abbreviated to "sub cond." in the register margin. It's Latin meaning conditionally, to indicate that the person has been baptised previously but that there was doubt about the validity of the administration of the baptism. That's assuming whoever took the child to the Catholic church for baptism admitted to the priest that he had already been "done" at C. of E.

Another explanation for 2 baptisms is that the baby was ill and was baptised in a hurry by the most convenient clergyman and taken to the family's own church later for a supplementary ceremony. Again there should be a note in the margin.

Marriages March qtr 1872
Heffernan    Catherine         Liverpool    8b   153
POTTER    Robert         Liverpool    8b   153

www.lancashirebmd.org.uk shows they married at Our Lady & St. Nicholas & St. Anne which was an Anglican Church

Marriages of Catholics in an Anglican church were recognised as valid by Catholic Church authorities at this time (until 1908).
