Bunkers Hill, Wadsley Bridge, WRY
« on: Wednesday 05 December 18 21:07 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone heard of this place?  I can't find it on any map or Google search.  from a 1901 baptism.  I have used the census as well but can't match it up with the maps.

What is the address of the family in the 1901 census?

What is date of the baptism? The census was taken on the night of 31 March.

Is the certificate you have the birth certificate or the baptismal certificate?

Where did the baptism take place?

(I am thinking that the family may be in the same vicinity, even if not at the same address, so knowing their whereabouts might be a starting point).

Here is Wadsley Bridge, but I can't see a "Bunkers Hill" in the area:
https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16&lat=53.4199&lon=-1.5013&layers=168&right=BingHyb

- maybe it was such a small area or farmstead that it is not marked on any maps
- maybe it is further from Wadsley Bridge
- maybe the name has changed
- maybe the map is not detailed enough to show the place
- maybe I can't see it for looking :)

An advert from a 1907 newspaper about 5 freehold dwelling houses at Bunkers Hill Wadsley, Sheffield for sale says "about a 3 minute walk from Wadsley Bridge Station".

Thanks all for the replies.
Ernest Bramall was baptised at Owlerton church 10th July 1901, parents living at Bunker Hills, Wadsley Bridge.  On the 1901 census (31 March) they were at Fishers Buildings, Wadsley Bridge.  The order of the entries was: …Railway Hotel, Penistone Road [know that one!], Crossley Mount, Crossley View, Trafalgar Place, Rose Bank, May Buildings, Bunkers Hill, Vine Cottage, Fishers Buildings [lots of entries], Rock House, Mount Pleasant, Bunkers Hill, Pheasant Hill, Fairests Houses, Works Lane, Wadsley Bridge, Swifts Buildings, Church Row, Parsonage House, Church Terrace…

I've looked at the NLS maps, the different editions, and not found anything except Penistone Road.  I've found inns named but not the railway hotel.  I don't suppose it's that important, I just like to know!!

Sadly, a lot of the original buildings (mentioned in the census) seem to have gone, but "Rock House" is still there. There would have been a very good view from it too.  :)

Frustratingly, although none of the maps (found so far) show Bunkers Hill, at least you have a pretty good idea of the location.  :)
