Christian Oswald or Steel *** Completed thank you ***
« on: Thursday 06 December 18 10:15 GMT (UK) »
Christian Oswald was born on 3 May 1819 in Berwick-upon-Tweed, daughter of Robert Oswald and Jean Waddell. I think she is the Christian Oswald who married George Steel in Berwick on 21 August. Is she also the Christian Steel who died in Glendale in 1847 aged 28?

And if so what became of George? Is he the 49-year-old widowed fishcurer, born Kirknewton, in Cheswick in the 1851 census, born 27 December 1801, son of Isaac Steel and Rachel Newton, died 18 September 1872? I have this George Steel in every census. He is not listed with a wife in 1841, and he is a widower in 1851, 1861 and 1871.

Any pointers (other than the GRO, which I am already aware of) would be gratefully appreciated.

Find a grave has an entry for George Steel - death date 11 Sep 1872,Branxton, Northumberland. (Also has Isaac Steel and others).

The North East Inheritance Database has a will for Isaac Steel, farmer of Branxton who died in 1849 and with probate in1850. He would seem to be the Isaac Steel showing above. Having had a quick look he does not appear to mention a son called George.(He does refer to sons Andrew, Thomas, Isaac and John).

If fish curer George is your man he is recorded with a brother Thomas in 1861 and 1871.

But......the GRO website lists Jane Ray Steel, mother's maiden surname Anderson and Rebecca (not Rachel as on freeBMD  :-\ ) mother's maiden surname Hall.

Rachel's death was registered in Glendale in 1847 but I now think this is George's mother.

Thank you all very much. This seems to clinch it - Christian married George Steel 1801-1872, but there were no children (I have checked the GRO for births with mother Oswald) and George did not remarry.

sgf28 and ColC - for future reference, where did you find the marriage listing with the fathers' names please?

George's and Thomas' brother John had a large family including Haig and Rachel. In 1861 Haig and Rachel were both living with their uncles Thomas and George, and in 1871 Haig was still with them, described as housekeeper to her uncle.
