census searching

If I enter 

john clarke 1837 Leicester

why do I get

every other Name in the book

for instance

thomas - henry - etc 1837 Northampton

pages and pages to search..

surely  John is John  dont show me Henry please.... Leicester is Leicester NOT northampton 2.957 to search and not in simplistic order

2,000 of them were not  John and Not Leicester.. 

One good thing they were all males that were offered..



Actually I am simply attempting to find my:

Frederick Clark/e shown on this 1871 census with his family -

and then off on his travels as his own mother has died and the lady on the census is his step mother.

So found a couple of possibles for him in 1881 

but the only possible marriage I found for his was with the name ALFRED CLARKE father deceased JOHN Clarke.  (which is correct..)
So had he always been known as FRED and not realised he was Frederick and when asked took Alfred or something.. or have I got the wrong Marriage..

1886 to Charlotte Tonks..   its on FindMyPast

so really need to find him in 1881 to see if he is Frederick or Alfred born in HYDES PASTURE  Hinckley.

have sent for the pdf.. 3 more days...

what have I or am I missing.....(I know.. dont say it... sparkle - intuition - or just a plain brain )

When I search FindMyPast with those details I get "no results found"

Do you have "include name variants" ticked or other options such as extra years added to the search etc?

Xin, you have it easy. If I enter my great grandmother's surname, Loughborough, whichever parameters I additionally set, I frequently get dozens and dozens and dozens of references to the town of Loughborough, and also Lord Loughborough which isn't even his surname. I even once searched with the name in inverted commas very specifically, "Kate Loughborough" , and I got an article about a performance of Kiss Me Kate, Loughborough Theatre.

I've also got a list of well over 30 different wrong and alternative spellings of Loughborough. Those Victorian clerks weren't that bright.

The 1871 family are to be found at RG 10 / 3236 / 2/ 24, at Hyde Pastures, Watling Street Road.

In 1881 they are at RG 11 / 3132 / 81 / 4, but Frederick isn't with them

He is shown as born 'Hydes' in 1871, but that doesn't mean he'll also be shown as that in subsequent censuses

think I have him... as a farm servant   indoor  in Kirkby mallory   still checking it out..


then nothing till the marriage of an ALFRED Clarke that shows John Clarke (could be a different JC) as father deceased..
so that PDF is ordered..

the marriage is as above to Charlotte Tonks..  and then the further census show him with her.

Some Anc. trees have this Charlotte married to an Alfred who is son of Samuel.. but the have NO certs..

its so easy to add without proof.. the name Clark/e so common... aaargh..

need to assure myself that this is the correct Alf/Fred 

The name  Tonks.. I KNOW I have seen in previous records of my family.. but  I cannot remember where......

Yes ... this is the correct marriage.. Ellen is Freds younger sister .. and HYDES later is known as Watling rd... its got to be. right.  (please)

Have you tried doing the search before you log-in?
Crazy as it sounds I got more relevant results than if I searched after logging-in.

I had to stop and think what you meant then....

Yes   what I do is attempt to confuse their    'cling on bits!!! '   by opening up a new search.. without the tree I am researching being shown....

So that sounds crazy but it is to enable them not to know what results I already have .. and fix me up with the same same same  links...



 words leave my head when I need them and so I use a term that is similar.. until the right one comes back..  It gets worse
