Dunedin Harbour .. Victoria Channel 1939
« on: Friday 07 December 18 06:42 GMT (UK) »
Assistance please?

Is there anyone who can enhance or bring some improvement to this photograph please of the SS Erlangen making its way down the Victoruia Channel to berth at Dunedin in August 1939.

The photograph is the only one known of the vessel at sea in or near Dunedin Harbour and was cropped from an old magazine from the 1970's.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Yes they are good aren't they...I did clean it, but it wasn't any better than the one you did so there was no point in posting it, so I decided to search for a better image.

Japeflakes and Treetotal

Thank you for your interest.  Good work.

Some of those other photographs I had seen previously.

The photograph that I posted had some significance to local history in Dunedin, New Zealand and events a few weeks later in the sub Antarctic,  Auckland Islands about the same time that WW2 broke out.  The Erlangen made a run for Chile (including under sail) before rounding Cape Horn and being caught by the Royal Navy in 1941.  The vessel was then scuttled off the River Plate near Uruguay and Argentina.

It is the only known photograph taken of the Erlangen either entering or leaving Dunedin Harbour.  The original is long gone .. lost .. and I was hoping to have this restored as best as possible.

Cheers
