Sorry, it was John you said you had found in 1871 though you mentioned a brother Thomas which probably means he was not your John if that Hugh & Ann are yours.

I am concerned though..
John's marriage gives his father as Hugh occupation Furnace Man.  The Hugh you have found is a Labourer in 1871.

Does your John appear on any census after he married with a possible parent or sibling.  The 1881 gives his birth place as Wrexham, where do later census say he was born.

i know it is confusing didnt notice the point you made in the census

1901 census st helens lancs probably near where his wife mary bains lived
john aged 55 place-illegible to me wrexham-coal hewer
mary 48 lancs
john edward 20
lily 8
pity i cant understand the town or parish sorry

1901 says Wales, Wrexham.  :)

also to clarify. after all your work, i popped down to the records office "museum" in wrexham. to look up john hughes marriage record. john hughes b 1845 wrexham. occ miner father hugh hughes occ furnaceman.
to mary bains father william.
