1871 census: where are summaries?
« on: Friday 07 December 18 11:44 GMT (UK) »
I was hoping to compare the summary pages of three adjacent townships in 1861 and 1871.  Both Ancestry and FindMyPast include the summary page in their online 1861, but neither has them for 1871.  By summary page I mean the one near the front of the run, giving number of dwellings, totals of males and females living there.

Can anyone please say where I could find that information online?

The Summary Pages are not normally included in the images from the Enumerator's Book. There were five pages in the front of the Book after the Description of the Enumeration District, before the census information, and these are not shown.
Which ones are you looking for?

In the 1861 for Speke the first page, "Description of the Enumeration District" is missing and when the Enumerator's Book was filmed the summary page iv, was included instead. The same thing has been done for Hale and Halewood, this is not normal.
In 1871 the first page, "Description of the Enumeration District" is included, and then goes straight to the census information.
If all the first six pages in the Enumerator's Books have been filmed then they may be available at the National Archives, but not on line.

Thanks, Stan.  That will save me a lot of fruitless hunting.  Iíll try a different tack.
