Winterborne Houghton PR Check
« on: Friday 07 December 18 19:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Is anyone here able to double check the marriage of Robert Joyce that took place in Winterborne Houghton in November 1585 for me.

Robert married a woman named Elizabeth on 2 November 1585. Findmypast has her surname down as "Joyce" but I think this is an error and it would be interesting to know what the original record says.

Thanks for any help or ideas.

Matt

The two transcriptions on FindMyPast were done by local family history societies; one shows 'blank' for Elizabeth's surname and the other does not give a surname.

Contacting the Dorset History Centre in Dorchester where the registers are held might help; they should be able to confirm if her surname was omitted or just not able to be read.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find an email for them.

Hi
I've had a look on Ancestry and there is no surname for the wife.
It says
The 2nd day of November were married Robert Joyce and Elizabeth the wife ------------

Sorry

Hi

Many thanks for that. This matches with the notes I have written down, so at least I know I didn't write it down wrong. As far as I can remember the surname "[Joyce]" was sent to me in an email by another researcher a while ago but unfortunately I no longer have the email.

I'll contact the Dorset History Centre to see if they can help in any way.
